Whether you are funding a property purchase, covering monthly living costs, or transferring a pension, moving money into Turkey involves real choices about cost, speed, and legal compliance. This article compares the main options available to foreign residents and buyers in 2026.

59a. Why turkey is a special case for money transfers

Turkeys currency has experienced significant volatility. The USD/TRY rate moved from an annual average of approximately 32.8 in 2024 to around 39.3 in 2025, with the spot rate reaching 42.5+ in early 2026. This means that timing and rate locking matter more for Turkey transfers than for most other destinations. Small differences in exchange rate timing can produce meaningful differences in what arrives.

Additionally, Turkey has specific regulatory requirements for foreign currency property purchases. Since January 2022, buyers must convert purchase funds to Turkish lira via a Turkish bank and obtain a Doviz Alim Belgesi (Foreign Currency Purchase Certificate). This document is mandatory for the Land Registry transfer – meaning that for property purchases, the payment route must pass through a Turkish bank account regardless of which transfer method you use initially.

59b. Swift bank transfer – reliable but expensive

A traditional international bank transfer using the SWIFT network is the most established method. Your bank sends the funds through a network of correspondent banks, each potentially deducting an intermediary fee. The result is that SWIFT transfers to Turkey typically cost:

  • Sending bank fee: EUR 15-40 per transfer
  • Intermediary bank fees: EUR 10-25 (deducted from the amount received)
  • Exchange rate markup: typically 1-3% above the mid-market rate
  • Transfer time: 2-5 working days

For large property purchase transfers, SWIFT remains the standard method because it produces a clear, auditable paper trail that Turkish banks and the Land Registry require. For regular monthly transfers, the cumulative cost is significant.

59c. Wise (formerly transferwise) – best for regular transfers

Wise has become the most recommended money transfer platform among Turkey expats and is the most frequently cited option on forums including Reddits r/Turkey and r/expats. It uses the mid-market exchange rate with no hidden markup, charging only a transparent flat-percentage fee. For a EUR 100 transfer, total fees are approximately EUR 7. For a EUR 5,000 transfer, fees are approximately EUR 16-25 depending on payment method.

Wise transfers to Turkish bank accounts typically arrive within minutes to one business day. The recipient needs a Turkish IBAN. The 10 million TRY per transfer limit is more than sufficient for most purposes.

Important limitation: for property purchase transactions that require a Doviz Alim Belgesi, the transfer must be structured through a Turkish bank. Wise transfers can fund your Turkish bank account, from which the formal currency conversion and certificate issuance can then take place. Wise suspended its Turkish lira balance features in 2023 due to local regulations – but sending TRY to Turkish bank accounts remains operational.

59d. Crypto – legal to hold, prohibited for direct payment

Since April 2021, Turkish law prohibits the use of cryptocurrencies as a direct payment instrument for goods and services within Turkey. You cannot pay for a property in Bitcoin or USDT directly. However, holding and trading cryptocurrencies remains legal. The practical route for those wishing to use crypto is: sell crypto to fiat currency outside Turkey, then transfer the fiat to Turkey via bank transfer or Wise. Any capital gains from crypto sales must be declared to Turkish tax authorities.

59e. Which method for which purpose

  • Property purchase (large sum, requires Doviz Alim Belgesi): SWIFT bank transfer directly to your Turkish bank account, then formal conversion at the bank.
  • Monthly living costs (EUR 500-5,000 range): Wise is the most cost-effective option – transfers arrive quickly and fees are transparent.
  • Emergency or urgent transfer: Wise for speed; Western Union for cash pickup if needed.
  • Pension or regular income: Wise or direct bank transfer depending on the sending institutions capabilities.

EXPERT ADVICE: For regular monthly transfers, Wise is the clear winner on cost and speed – it is what most Turkey expats actually use. For property purchases, the Doviz Alim Belgesi requirement means your funds must pass through a Turkish bank regardless, making SWIFT the natural choice for the final transfer. Never send large sums without verifying current rates and understanding the regulatory context – lira volatility means a few days of timing difference can change what arrives by a meaningful amount. P.S. Forget cheapest. The right question is: what is the most legally sound way to move money to Turkey? The answer is always the same official banking channels, full documentation, clean paper trail. Wise, SWIFT, bank transfer all fine as long as everything is declared and traceable. The few euros you might save using an informal channel are not worth the complications that follow. There are no shortcuts worth taking here.
