The basic rule
Car ownership and use in Turkey is quite accessible for foreigners. However, the rules on foreign-plated vehicles, high car prices due to the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV), and the strictness of traffic enforcement are all things you need to know.
68a. Foreign-plated vehicle – rules and time limits
To bring a foreign-plated vehicle to Turkey, you must first meet the resident abroad requirement. This means having been physically present outside Turkey for at least 185 days in the last year.

Foreign-plated vehicles cannot be transferred to another person in Turkey. The vehicle can only be driven by the owner and their immediate family members.
Good to know:
Those residing in Turkey do not have the right to bring in a temporary foreign-plated vehicle from abroad. Listings advertising cheap luxury cars online generally suggest illegal methods – these vehicles are confiscated and heavy penalties are applied.
Traffic fines:
Traffic fines issued to foreign-plated vehicles must be paid before the vehicle can leave Turkey.
68b. Buying a turkish-plated vehicle
Foreign nationals with a residence permit, work permit, citizenship or title deed can purchase a vehicle in Turkey. The process is the same as for Turkish citizens.
THE ÖTV REALITY – WHY ARE CARS SO EXPENSIVE?
Vehicles in Turkey are far more expensive than in Europe. The sole reason is the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV), which is extremely high.
A car priced at 50,000 Euro in Germany costs approximately 150,000 Euro in Turkey.
Be aware of this difference before deciding – bringing a vehicle from your home country may be more advantageous than buying in Turkey (within legal limits).
68c. Is a foreign driving licence valid in turkey?
A foreign driving licence is valid for use in Turkey for 1 year. After one year, the foreign licence must be converted to a Turkish driving licence.
HOW TO CONVERT: Apply to the Traffic Registration Authority. Driving licences from most European and Asian countries are accepted as valid in Turkey – but conversion to a Turkish licence is mandatory after 1 year.
68d. Motorcycles and scooters
Foreign nationals can also purchase motorcycles, scooters and bicycles in Turkey. A valid driving licence is required for all motorised vehicles.
Traffic enforcement:
Traffic police in Turkey enforce rules very strictly. No distinction is made between foreign nationals and Turkish citizens – rule violations are applied to everyone equally.
68e. Traffic insurance
If you own a vehicle, compulsory third-party liability insurance (Zorunlu Mali Sorumluluk Sigortası – ZMSS) is mandatory. The cost varies depending on the vehicles engine capacity, horsepower, and whether it is a passenger or commercial vehicle.
68f. Is a car essential in alanya?
If you live in the city centre:
A small motorcycle or scooter is sufficient. Alanya city centre is compact and easy to get around.
If you live outside the city or in villa areas:
Having a car is much more practical.
Car rental:
Car rental is not recommended for long-term residents. Daily rental costs in Alanya average 50-100. When calculated monthly, buying a vehicle is far more economical.

Before buying a vehicle in Turkey, understand the ÖTV reality – The same car can cost three times the European price. If you are staying short-term, come with your foreign plates. If you are staying long-term, consider buying a Turkish-plated vehicle or a motorcycle/scooter.
P.S. My honest advice: do not buy a car in Turkey unless you absolutely have to. The tax burden on vehicles here is significant ÖTV alone can double the base price of a car. Public transport, taxis, and car rentals cover most needs in Alanya. Keep your money for better uses.
